A Short Glimpse of the Turku City Center

Today, I spent most of my day until 4:00 p.m. playing video games with Aleksi (seems to be a good way to bond) and finally catching up with my blog!

Messi likes to sleep on my foot

Niklas came home at around 4:00 p.m. and said that he could take me to the city center. After watching the beginning of a movie called "Big Daddy" we started to walk to the bus station. While we were waiting for the bus, we happened to spot a fox! Foxes are apparently pretty common on the island where I live but I hadn't seen one yet. The fox walked across the street a few times before it disappeared into the tall grass from where it came. We got on the bus and received a ticket that we would show to the bus driver on our way back. The ticket had a time on it and if we returned by that time we wouldn't have to pay the return ticket. After a short 20 minute ride we arrived at the city center.

Taking the bus to the city

Our first stop was Hesburger. Hesburger is the Finnish version of McDonalds and I figured that I should try it sometime during my stay in Finland so why not today. It wasn't very different from Burger King or any other fast food restaurant but the prices were a bit more expensive with burger meals at €5.50 ($7.50).

My first Hesburger

Next, we went to the DNA store (the phone store for my Finnish SIM card) so that I could put more money on my SIM card. After that, Niklas and I walked around and he showed me around some of the malls. We didn't have that much time in the city today, but I at least had a small glimpse of what was to come.

The heart of Turku. During the day they have an open-air market in the center square.

On the way back, the bus drove along the river that went through the city and I was able to see all of the restaurant boats and museums that were near it. On the way back, Niklas fell asleep a few times because he went to a sauna party the night before and watched the FIFA game so I forgot to press the "STOP" button on the way back and we had to get off a few stops later. Nevertheless we had a nice walk back to the house and ran into some of his friends from school. It was nice to get to talk to Niklas today, now that he has more time without work or soccer practice. He is still a bit quiet but we had some good conversations during our trip and I hope we will become good friends over the summer. I really hope to get to know my host family well so that I can still keep in contact with them like my host mother has with her host family in Wyoming, even after 26 years. I believe it is a wonderful thing to have such connections around the world.

That was pretty much my day today but tomorrow we will go to friend's house for midsummer fest!
